The Union Mine boy’s baseball team finished a strong season with a 7-10 record. The boys held in tight and tried to fight for a spot to playoffs, but weren’t able to pull it out in the end. Coach Freeman felt very confident in the team’s performance in the beginning, and held most of that confidence when they were done. Going into the season, Coach Freeman and Coach Robinson were looking for a shot to playoffs, as does any coach. These coaches were confident enough in their ability to work with that they had to make a good team. Coming out, the pitching was very solid with Justin McPeters (SR), Darren Baker (SR), and Will Nutting (JR). Offensively, the team’s hitting was scattered and inconsistent, but their bats improved over time. Coach Freeman thinks the boys could have had more of a mature approach about the season. They needed to go into the games a little more aggressive with positive energy, and more games would have been won. With six of the starting players being seniors, a lot of spots will have to be filled next year including two pitching positions. Senior Logan Neville proved he was more than capable this year of exceeding Coach Freeman’s expectations. He came in without the most aggressive attitude, and still played the best ball he could. The seniors definitely wanted to finish out high school with a good season. McPeters has been having a great year finishing out high school as UM’s starting shortstop. He has been said to be the number one shortstop in Northern California, so congratulations to Justin McPeters! Even losing seniors like McPeters and Baker; the team will be able to carry on next year with the wins. Many good sophomores are coming up next year to the varsity level including Ryan Pearman and Derek Saich. Walker Neville finished the second half of the season of varsity filling the 3rd base position. He has proved himself to be more than varsity material.  If Freeman can keep the offense consistent, the season will go very well next year. The fans as well as the coaches enjoyed a good season this year also. Kyle LaRue is an avid fan of Union Mine’s baseball team and has been to every game this season. LaRue foresees Walker Neville being a pertinent key player next year as a junior and W Nutting finishing out his senior year throwing strong. After a rough start from the boys, LaRue said “the boys have beaten themselves a couple of times and need to stop making careless errors on the field.” However, watching from the sidelines, LaRue can see the dedication in the players this year. All in all, Coach Freemen and Kyle LaRue are proud of our boys and look forward to next year!
